K-State Earns Back-to-Back Third-Place Finishes at Cowboy Jamboree - K-StateSports.com

STILLWATER, Okla. – It is a different year for both the Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams and the results continue to show it, as each group posted third-place team finishes at the Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday (October 3) at the OSU Cross Country Course. The back-to-back top-three performances resulted in the highest finishes by each team at the Cowboy Jamboree since the 2016 season.

Competing against a field that included most of the Big 12, the Wildcats enjoyed a successful day all around.

The men's team, who was competing without their leading runner in junior Cooper Schroeder, recorded 104 points in the 8k run, which put them behind only host Oklahoma State (23 points) and Iowa State (32 points) and ahead of Big 12 foes Kansas (fourth), Baylor (sixth) and Texas Tech (eighth).

On the strength of a pair of top-10 performances from sophomore Jaybe Shufelberger and senior Kassidy Johnson, the women's team collected 90 points to finish behind the Cyclones (29) and host Cowgirls (48) and ahead of Baylor (fourth), Kansas (sixth) and Texas Tech (eighth).

"Team ran pretty well, although I think we still have a lot of room to improve," said head coach Ryun Godfrey. "We have a few more weeks to get some work in before the Big 12 Championship."

The men's team was led by a new face in the 8k run as sophomore Kerby Depenbusch put himself into great position, as the Great Bend, Kansas native posted a new personal time of 25:01.5 to place 16th overall.

"Basically, I just wanted to take it 1k at a time and stick with the front group as long as possible," stated Depenbusch. "The last section of the race, I just tried to get as many guys as possible."

Senior Noah Stevenson rounded out the top 20 for the Wildcats in the 8k meet, as he soared to 19th place at a time of 25:06.1. Sophomore Hadley Splechter (22nd, 25:10.7) and junior Stephen Kielhofner (23rd, 25:14.9) both took spots in the top 25. Kielhofner shattered his personal best in the 8k run by nearly 25 seconds.

The difference maker for the K-State men came in the top-75 range for the 8k meet. Sophomores Jack Thomas (37th, 25:37.7) and Jack Moore (50th, 25:59.2), juniors Mike Rohlinger (51st, 25:59.2) and Dylan Brenneman (69th, 26:25.1) and freshman Aiden Higgerson (75th, 26:31.6) all gave impressive efforts that propelled the Wildcats to a top-three finish. Moore and Higgerson also clinched new personal records today.
Sophomore Jaybe Shufelberger bounced back in the 6k race to lead the way for the K-State women in the second race of the day. After dealing with health issues back at the Bob Timmons Classic, Shufelberger regained her form and jolted across the OSU Cross Country Course to land herself in fourth place at a pace of 21:43.1.

"Going into the race, I wanted to get out a little more conservatively because some of my best races have been when I've worked my way up throughout it," said Shufelberger. "I knew there would be a good group of girls to compete with, so I wanted to get in the pack and then hopefully be able to pull away. I know my abilities and where my fitness is, so I just needed to be confident. That way I could execute the race how I wanted too."

"Overall, I was super happy with how the race went. I was able to stick to my strategy and compete with the field to the end."

After scoring a fifth-place finish at the Bob Timmons Classic, junior Kassidy Johnson made her way into the 10th-overall spot for the women's 6k race with a time of 22:04.5. Johnson and Shufelberger filled up the lone two spots in the top-10 leaderboard for K-State.

The Wildcats got a boost in the middle of the pack with sophomore Hannah Stewart (21st, 22:39.3), freshman Emma Lucas (27th, 22:54.0) and sophomores Sydney Burton (32nd, 23:02.2) and Cailan Steward (49th, 23:30.8) all locking up spots in the top 50. All four runners posted new personal bests with their times today.
The women had two runners who made their debut in a Wildcat uniform down in Stillwater, as sophomore transfer Katie Kasunic and freshman McKenna Polus delivered impressive efforts in the 6k run. Kasunic, a product of Overland Park, Kansas, notched a time of 23:47.9 to secure a spot at 64th place. Polus did her part to keep K-State in the top-three conversation, as she crossed the line in 67th place with a pace of 23:50.8.

For the men's race, host Oklahoma State captured the team victory with 23 points in the 8k race, while Iowa State scored the first-place medal in the women's 6k run with 29 points. ISU runners Wesley Kiptoo and Cailie Logue both clinched the individual victories, as Kiptoo crossed the finish line in the men's race at 23:34.5, while Logue sped through the OSU Cross Country Course at a pace of 20:38.6.

K-State will make one last trip back to Stillwater on Saturday, October 17 as both teams will compete in the OSU Invite, located at the OSU Cross Country Course. This is the last race K-State will participate in before the Big 12 Championship, which will take place at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence, Kansas on Friday, October 30.

"We are not at our best yet, but we will be," said Godfrey.
