Accumulating snow is predicted across the Northland from Tuesday morning through the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
Snow is expected to begin between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for most of the Northland. The weather service is predicting between 3-5 inches for Duluth, 2-6 inches in the surrounding areas, with less snow on the southern shore of Lake Superior in Wisconsin.
The snowfall is predicted to be the heaviest, with periods of rain/snow mix, between 1-7 p.m., impacting the afternoon commute. The snowfall is also expected to persist later on the North Shore, with the heaviest rates occurring Tuesday night for the tip of the Arrowhead.
The weather service has high confidence in at least 2-3 inches of accumulation and the two- to three-hour heavy snowfall leading to low visibility and slick roads. The weather service has less confidence in the locally higher amounts across the elevations of the North Shore.
Early season storms usually result in widely varying amounts of accumulation across the North Shore and Twin Ports, according to the report. Areas near the lake should expect less accumulation, while higher elevations like Finland and Isabella could see over 6 inches of show.
The snow is expected to be wet and heavy. Some roads will become snow-covered and slippery and low temperatures could lead to slick roads in the late afternoon and evening. Drivers should expect varying road conditions.
Conditions will be worst Tuesday afternoon and early evening, especially along the North Shore. The Twin Ports will see the heaviest snowfall in the afternoon.
The weather service is forecasting another round of snow to begin early Thursday morning and last into early Friday morning in northern Minnesota. Due to warm temperatures, rain is expected in Wisconsin as well as mixed precipitation. Some areas of Northwestern Wisconsin could experience isolated rumbles of thunder.
