ROCHESTER, NY -- It has been over a year since RIT's fall and winter intercollegiate teams have been able to practice or compete. For those student-athletes, March and April isn't just the beginning of spring in Upstate New York, but the return to competition.Among the fall sports, men and women's soccer and women's volleyball, along with men and women's swimming and diving and men and women's basketball were given the green light to begin practice and limited competition this spring. Teams are allowed to practice up to five days a week, and play in no more than three games.
"When I received word that we could play a few games this season I was beyond excited," said senior women's basketball player Sarah Henretta. "For me this was the last time I would get to play with my class, since I was the only one staying for a fifth year, so being able to play a few last games was really important to me."
Sabrina Wolfe, a senior forward on the women's basketball team, missed out on her senior season in 2020-21, and was not sure if she would get the chance to practice or play with her teammates again.
"I was shocked it actually was going to happen," said Wolfe. "Being with my teammates was really what this whole thing was about. My teammates are my family and when we didn't practice or lift it was hard because that is when we see each other the most. Since I am a senior, this was my last time doing all this stuff with my teammates. I wanted those last practices, lifts and games with them. I cherished every single moment with them."
Jared Short, a senior defender on the men's soccer team, relished the chance to play again with his teammates. "When I received the word that I was able to play a few games in the spring I was very excited. Especially with being a senior, this would give me an opportunity to play out my last three games and actually know they were my last. I also was super excited to see some of the younger guys play their first college game."
Throughout the first semester many student-athletes had to lift and train on their own or in small groups which proved difficult at times.
"Being able to practice and lift with my teammates again was amazing, said Henretta. "Trying to lift, condition, and shoot alone during COVID was very tough mentally. When we were finally allowed to practice and scrimmage together, the gym had a totally different atmosphere."
None of the games this spring will count toward individual or team career records. However, it doesn't mean the contests are any less intense. Many of the coaches are using this spring season as a beginning to the 2021-2022 season.
"Each day provides us an opportunity to improve ourselves individually and collectively, said RIT men's soccer coach Bill Garno. "This leads to both short term and longer term (2021 season) development."
"We are grateful for the opportunities we had this spring given the circumstances, said women's basketball coach and Senior Women's Administrator Amy Reed. "When we were given the green light to schedule two exhibition games, I'd say that was the best thing that could have happened for our team, especially our seniors. It was awesome being able to compete again."
