[D’backs.com] Locastro on return: ‘I had a blast’ - It was 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ clubhouse was not yet open, but there was Tim Locastro sitting in the parking lot anxiously waiting. After spending 10 days in isolation following a positive COVID-19 test, Locastro craved being around his teammates again. “I was completely bored,” Locastro said. “For the last 10 days, I was stuck in a house for 240 straight hours. I I wanted to be on the field more than anything. I mean, seeing my teammates, coaches, it was like the first day of school for me and I had a blast.”
[AZ Central] Tim Locastro ‘thrilled’ to be back at camp after COVID absence - Though Locastro had a symptomless bout with the virus, he found himself desperate for things to do to pass the time. At one point he tried to see if he could do 1,500 pushups in a day but wound up stopping at 800. “At 750, I started to cramp up,” Locastro said, adding that he did 240 pushups in his best hour-long stretch. Locastro said he still has no idea how he caught the virus, suggesting the only possibilities were trips to the grocery store. Locastro’s absence came at a time when the club appears to have at-bats up for grabs in right field, with starter Kole Calhoun out following knee surgery. There doesn’t seem to be much concern from either Lovullo or Locastro about the missed time costing Locastro a chance to claim those at-bats.
[Arizona Sports] D-backs’ offense leads the way in Cactus League win over Padres - The Arizona Diamondbacks’ offense shone on a dreary day in Peoria on Saturday in a 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres. Centerfielder Ketel Marte was 1-3 at the plate with a leadoff dinger on the first pitch of the day against Padres pitcher Adrian Morejon, his first home run of the spring. The Pike has been rolling in seven spring training games, hitting a ridiculous .500 with a 1.100 OPS, four doubles, four RBI and two walks. “I think he looks fantastic with his results,” said Torey Lovullo on the work Marte has put in at the plate. “Those are the things that a lot of people see. There’s slug, there’s home runs. But he’s getting himself into some good hitting counts, and he is making good decisions on balls in the hitting zone that he is looking for.”

[MLB.com] Ohtani ‘excited’ after day of highs and lows - Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani ran into some trouble in the second inning but otherwise showed impressive stuff on the mound yet again in Saturday’s 6-5 loss to the White Sox at Camelback Ranch. His fastball reached as high as 99 mph and his splitter looked unhittable at points, especially in a three-pitch strikeout of Yoán Moncada in the first inning. Making his second start of the spring, Ohtani had some trouble with his command and was charged with five runs on six hits and one walk over 2 1/3 innings. But Ohtani struck out four, and three of those runs scored after he left the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the second. He returned for the third and gave up a leadoff double to Luis Robert, who also homered in the second, but struck out Yermín Mercedes for the second out before exiting.
[MLB Trade Rumors] Rangers Prospect Bayron Lora In Car Accident - Rangers outfield prospect Bayron Lora is in hospital after a recent car accident in his native Dominican Republic, Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101 (Twitterlinks) reports. One of the passengers in Lora’s car was killed in the collision. Lora and the other passengers are in serious condition, though in a follow-up tweet, Gomez writes that Lora “has been recovering satisfactorily.” The 18-year-old Lora signed with Texas during the 2019-20 international signing window, inking a deal that contained a $3.9MM bonus. Lora was considered one of the top hitting prospects of the 2019-20 int’l class, with MLB Pipeline’s scouting report citing his “prodigious bat speed and strength.” Pipeline ranks Lora 20th on its list of the Rangers’ top 30 prospects, and gave Texas fans a noteworthy comp in saying that Lora is “looks like Joey Gallo’s tag-team partner and produces similar exit velocities.”
[NBC Sports] Trevor Cahill finalizes $1.5 million deal to join Pirates - Right-hander Trevor Cahill and the Pittsburgh Pirates finalized a one-year, $1.5 million contract, a deal that allows him to earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses for innings. Cahill could earn $100,000 for 75 innings, $150,000 for 100, $200,000 for 125, $250,000 for 150 and $300,000 for 175. The 33-year-old was 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA in six starts and five relief appearances for San Francisco last season. He struck out 31 and walked 14 in 24 innings, holding opponents to a career-low .184 batting average. After moving to the bullpen, he pitched five shutout innings in five games. He earned $519,624 in prorated pay from a $2 million salary.
